The blue mussel can be up to 10 cm long and has a characteristic black-blue-violet color on its smooth oval shell with mother-of-pearl shiny inside. The blue mussel is also called “pile mussel”. It lives on plankton as it filters from the water, but it does not breathe like many other mussels. Blue mussels gather in banks where there can be up to 12,000 individuals per m2. Here they live in clusters on the seabed or sit on piles and rocks by the sea. The blue mussel has a thick shell with a strong closing function, though not stronger than that the beach crab and the starfish can force the shells apart and eat the mussel.
Did you know that:
The mussel is a vitamin bomb as it is rich in vitamin A, B, C and D as well as on proteins and many healthy mineral salts. You only have to eat fresh fresh mussels and they must be cooked.
