The whelk is also just called a conch. It can grow up to 12 cm high and lives on sandy or rocky bottom in the North Atlantic on both shallow water, but also down to several hundred meters depth. The whelk is a predator that reclines its prey with its wide foot. Then it shoots its mouth out and drills holes in the skull with its tears. The snail house grows at the edge of the opening and the older the snail becomes, the larger the house becomes. The house is twisted because more lime is deposited on one side than the other.
Did you know that:
The whelk is a requested food in other countries and Denmark has an increasing export of snails to especially France and China.
