Every year, more than 1,000 tonnes of waste are landed on Danish beaches – and it is only the tip of the iceberg, for more than two-thirds of the waste ends at the bottom of the sea. It is especially metal effects that fall to the bottom of course due to the weight, but glass often finds its way to the beach even though it is basically also heavy. At beaches in Denmark, it is typically bottles or glasses with lids, where there has been air in the container which weight-wise has helped the object into the beach.
There is no doubt that plastic is the biggest problem with very long breakdown times. But glass does not belong in the sea, although it does not have any direct pollution impact.
Did you know that:
It can take over 1,000,000 years for the sea to break down glass.
