The breadcrumb sponge is an animal seaweed that is very common on the Danish coasts. The sponge is stuck and when you find it on the beach it is often on stones, piles, shells, algae and seaweed plants that have also been habitat in the sea. Sometimes it lies for itself and is “fallen off”. This kind of sponges are completely primitive multicellular animals. The breadcrumb sponge is gel-like with small pores on the upper side and a skeleton of silicone needles. The sponge can be orange, yellow, red, brown, green or whitish and the shape depends on the habitat.

Did you know that:

The breadcrumb mushroom has got its name because it looks like breadcrumbs in the dried state.
