The razor clam is characterized by its long thin shells that resemble a folded old-fashioned razor. Razor clams grow greatest in the North Sea, where the water is most saline. There are various razor clams in Denmark that are different in their form – small, curved and ordinary razor clams. It is mostly “American razor clam” that you can find on the Danish beaches, but they are similar. The razor mussel lives on algae and other organic matter, which it filters from the seawater. The knife cluster is typically about 17 cm long.
Did you know that:
American razor is a so-called invasive species that has come to Denmark in the early 80s as “blind passenger” via foreign ships that have had ballast water aboard which has contained larvae from the sea area they have sailed off.
