The slipper has got its name because the shell looks like a little slipper. The shell can be 5 – 6 cm. The top is brownish or marbled and the underside with the partition is shiny white. The snail has come to Europe from North America in the late 1800s along with imported oysters. The snail lives on plankton, which it filters from the water. Thus, the slipper screw can be a serious nutrient competitor for oysters, which also live by filtering the seawater for plankton.
