Common periwinkle can grow up to 35 mm high and are found in most places along Danish coasts. The snail house is thick with a short top-shaped spire. The color is dark, grayish or brown and often there are small holes made to brushworm. The periwinkle lives on algae which it shreds with its tongue, which is significant in relation to the size of the animal. Like other sea snails, the periwinkle can close the orifice of the snail housing with a lime lid, which means that it can stay dry for a long time at low tide.

Did you know that:

The periwinkle can be eaten and is often served as white-wine-steamed beach snails. Especially in France and Italy it is an exquisite delicacy.
